Heartwarming Tearjerker of the Day: Scott Widak has Down syndrome and is terminally ill with liver disease, and he loves to receive mail. So his nephew Sean O’Connor recently posted his P.O. Box on Reddit, to see whether anyone might be interested in sending his uncle a letter: “One of my uncle’s favorite things to do is open mail, and I thought that if he got a lot of mail it would cheer him up.”
It’s been a month since the post, and Widak, an artist, has received mail from all over the world, including the United States, Sweden, Finland, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Mexico. Redditors have sent heartfelt letters, custom artwork, art supplies, DVDs, and personal keepsakes.
“The mail that’s arrived has all been extremely positive and thoughtful,” O’Connor says. “My family and I are amazed at how so many strangers could come together for a random act of kindness.”
Don’t miss the rest of the pics — they’ll make your Monday.

Constantly inspired by snail mail.
Finally: I combined two great loves of mine, maps and mail.
The world map is above my bed on a board, with pins stuck in to track/represent the pen-pals I have from different places. Yellow are the pen pals I know [IRL], blue are the pen pals I don’t know [IRL], orange are the post cards I’ve received via PostCrossing, and white is Toronto (where I live).
Around the board are some mail art things: a couple I’ve made, but I’d like it to be all the little things people send me along with their amazing letters.
I also hope this will help me with my geography. Elija: loves maps; terrible at geography.
Yes! I’m so sorry it’s taken me so long to respond: my final month at school was super busy!
Tonight I wrote 3 letters and 7 post cards and can’t manage anymore… but yours is on the top of the pile! (I love it by the way! So much!)
And never fret, all those who have written me: responses are winging their way to you soon.
Cheers, dears.
FINALLY had a chance to start replying to the amazing letters (and post cards) of amazing that I’ve received in the past month.
This is the closest post box to my house, and probably my most favourite.
Here’s to hoping indeed.
I’ve been busy with boring things lately, and while I finally read a stack of letters dating back to the beginning of April, I still need to reply to them.
THIS WEEK, YOU GUYS. I’M GONNA DO IT.
Thanks for being so rad and sending me such awesome and amazing things: I will do my best to reciprocate :)
I finally got a hair cut AND checked my post box today (it’s been a while! so busy!); I must make sure to check more frequently, because waiting for me were five letters, six post cards, and a slip for the “do no bend” letter (second photo). The postal clerk and I both had a good/awkward laugh. I love my friends/pen pals.
I think that’s part of the beauty of mail: you make something so uniquely personal for someone else, and then never see it again. Yes, in a way, I’m giving a part of myself away, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. As someone who makes things, and finds existence through creation, I can’t hold on to all of the things I make: I don’t want to. For me, mail is an aspect of my practice where I get to make things for strangers for the simple joy of creation, as well as giving something away for free. No matter how much work I make to sell, I will continue to give things away to strangers for free. It’s refreshing.
