This is what my desk looks like right now. After a very busy semester of school (undergraduate thesis!), (which was also peppered with illness,) I’ve done some great organizing since Christmas. I’ve rearranged my work space to optimize on the physical space I have available to me, as well as put up some sweet shelves.

Throughout all this was the pile/bag of letters that I had yet to respond to. One is dated from September, unopened.

I am very sorry, my wonderful pen pals: I will be sending letters/post cards/drawings to everyone in my pile by tomorrow. I want to start the New Year off right.

This is the letter that came along with the package my friend sent me. When I asked, she didn’t think she had included it, but gave up on it and threw it out.

I’m so glad she didn’t.

For me, this is exactly why I love letters. It is just so inherently a letter; so beautifully human.

Amazing package from my friend Amelia. She’s one of my old roommates from when I lived in Australia, and we share a great deep love for zines. This is an amazing haul, and I will reward myself when I’ve completed some thesis stuff by reading them.

Her letter is quite fantastic as well. It’s half a page saying how she doesn’t want to move out of the place where she’s living, and the last [half] sentence is
I guess it will mean an end to
That’s it. It’s not even signed. It also has marks where she dropped her chicken sandwich on it. It might be one of my favourite letters, because it is just so uniquely a letter.
I might scan it and post it (with her permission), who knows.

Trying to start thesis right = making my home studio (/bedroom) a good working environment. The big white boards a foam core (aka poor man’s cork board): the goal is to cover/fill them with ideas, inspiration, sketches, works-in-progress, etc.
The bulletin board is for assorted notes, etc, and wonderful things I get in the mail from my awesome array of pen pals.

Also, my desk is crazy clean!
Seriously. It’s usually much worse.

Hello wonderful pen pals and mail enthusiasts!

I’m sorry for my seemingly excessive delay in responding to certain letters and my sad lack of posting. I have health issues regarding my back which [sometimes] affects mobility, and when your post box is a certain distance from your house, checking it can be problematic.
SO, I’m sorry but I haven’t actually checked my post box since around June 20th, and haven’t been able to do too much writing in the past few weeks. But the good news is that I am on the mend! I think. I hope. Ugh. I’ll keep you posted (pun intended).

Hi Everybody! I recently noticed that there has been a vast request for handwritten/snail mail around - and I’m all for it since I love actual-handwritten letters and just receiving something from someone across the world, so, I’m starting this project ~letters to the world~. I’ll be sending out letters to anyone who would like to receive letter anywhere in the world for free. You don’t have to write me back but it would be very much appreciated if you do. I’ll be posting updates here in my blog so you can follow me for any progress and whatnots. The only catch is you have to give me a subject/topic, anything you’d like your to letter to be about, you can ask questions, advice or just some random subject. If anyone’s interested you can TA or e-mail me for your address.

My adventures experimenting with sealing wax have led me to send a pair of sample envelopes through the mail to see if regular wax will truly chip, crack, or snap off in transit. Pictured here is my best one so far, made using J. Herbin Kings’ Wax and a fleur-de-lis seal from Michaels. I’ll let you know how they make out in the post.

Drooooooool. I love a good wax-sealed envelope.
Also, I love testing the postal system: sending strange things to yourself (or a partner in crime!) and seeing if/when the turn up.
